Monthly Recap July-Aug 2019

On July 13, 2019, Mallory and Caleb tied the knot and celebrated at the Edmonton Scottish Society. These two met with me after I DJ’ed their friends’ wedding the year earlier, and immediately upon meeting them I knew that they were good stuff. Instantly welcoming and genuine, M & C have an incredible circle of friends and family that radiate fun and a love for laughing.

I made a little video chronicling the party’s highlights, check it out below!

On July 19, I did the opening set for a SURPRISE Engagement Party for two lovely Edmontonians! Now, the engagement wasn’t a surprise- they just thought they were going to a small dinner at Bottega off Whyte with another couple to celebrate their recent wedding plans and when they walked in, over fifty of their closest family and friends were there to celebrate with them! So, so sweet. Jac and Suzy from GirlsClub DJs closed out the night with a KILLER set that kicked off what I’m sure will be a beautiful wedding lead-up for those two.

Little music nerd-out here: on Saturday July 20th, I ACTUALLY took a Saturday off to see Slash with Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators! Anyone who knows me at all knows that Slash’s music is my all-time #1, so to see him perform in any form is always a blast. Solo, GNR, VR, Snakepit, I love it all, and Myles and the Boys are a great collab! I also had an opportunity to wear my 6” silver KISS space boots because well, general admission. We got a FIFTEEN MINUTE Wicked Stone solo, and everyone seemed in great spirits. Always such a blast.

On August 8th, I did a short Happy Hour set at Central Social Hall Downtown on behalf of GirlsClubDJs, right across the street from my first apartment when I was in Uni! I’d spent many a happy hour at Central, so to go back and check out their beautiful back patio was a real pleasure. This was the first night of Edmonton Folk Fest, so of course the weather was windy as heck and close to the set-closer, the wind picked up and we moved it all inside before someone got Mary Poppins’ed off the roof by a patio umbrella! Thanks so much to the fab staff at Central for making Happy Hour absolutely delightful for everyone while I got to spin some fun throwback remixes and funky jams.

And then on August 10th, I went out to Waskatenau to celebrate their Fair Days! I’ve DJ’ed a handful of weddings in this area, and if there is one thing you can be sure of, it’s that that crowd can line dance like no one’s business. Jubilee Drive from Fort Saskatchewan performed an originals and cover-heavy set that warmed the crowd up just right. From 8-11, we had a great wrap up to the weekend’s softball tournament and festivities, with the next day being reserved mostly for the kids. Everyone was out at this party, and it was so good to see familiar faces and a party ready-to-go. Thanks again to the Victoria Trail Ag Society for recruiting me to be a part of Waskatenau Fair Days 2019, and I hope to see you all again soon!

Jen and Chris

Know how last time I said I loved working close to home? Well, this one brought me even closer, with Woodbend Hall being the location of multiple haunted-houses, birthday parties, and craft lessons throughout my childhood. Jen and Chris aren’t from the area, but their MC Troy was, and we instantly bonded over us attending the same country schools K-Grad!

Though not planned, I jumped in and played their ceremony when their original music plans fell through. We went right on in to reception with everyone using the space as an indoor/outdoor mingling zone. Jessica Kaitlyn Photography snapped the whole night as Mercer Catering provided us with dinner, and after some heart-moving speeches, we were off to cake cutting, the first dance where we included everyone halfway through, and an all-night dance party that went right to the final bell at 1:00 AM. Thank you, Jen and Chris for having Tea Cup Productions at your big day!

BANGER OF THE NIGHT:

Lee and Alyson

I was approached by Lee when a fellow DJ friend referred me to him to celebrate he and Alyson’s nuptials at the end of June. I’m from Spruce Grove, so a wedding out in Stony Plain feels like home to me. Fantastically nice people, a beautiful setting, and an easygoing atmosphere set the tone for a fabulous reception where we laughed, ate, and mingled for hours before taking to the dance floor until almost two am! Alyson and Lee both have an infectious warmth, and can both brighten up any room with their laughter and smiles.

I made this quick little video with some of my favourite highlights from the evening, enjoy!

Season of Hope

Saturday, June 22 was incredibly busy for me, and so fulfilling.

When Sarah Valencia from OurJonrah Events reached out to me and extended an offer to appear at More Than Gold by Sonja Deklerk’s 2nd Annual Season of Hope Fundraiser, I was instantly in. I already knew that Sarah brings so much brightness and coordination to every production, and the list of involved sponsors was packed with Edmonton gems. It was beautiful. Being around all of these inspirational individuals all afternoon was so motivating; I went on with the rest of my two-set evening fully recharged. DJing to 2 AM is nothing when you’re riding the high of being around good people. At one point, I geeked out on how cool Sonja is and said something like “I don’t even know you really, but I am so proud of you, this is so lovely!”

BANGER OF THE NIGHT

After wrapping up the fashion show at The Creative Hive, I dashed to the Chateau Lacombe downtown and raced my gear into the ballroom for the KO86 Afterparty hosted by KO Boxing, where the victorious Jelena Mrdjenovich came to celebrate her win with family, friends, and fans. While she raised a shiner on her right eye after ten rounds of boxing, we all mixed and mingled to club-classic remixes with some of my own personal faves thrown in. The WBC and WBA Featherweight World Champion stuck around ‘til the very end, and at 2:00 Susan (CL’s Catering Manager) and I threw the lights on, congratulated each other on a great event, packed up our party, and went home.

It’s been a spell since I drove home with a Jeep-load of equipment in the middle of the night, I really do love the calm after such a busy day. What do I usually choose to listen to on the radio on the drive home? Absolutely nothing.

PREFERRED VENDOR: Pop Up Weddings YEG

I love the idea of a pop-up wedding. Often held at a non-traditional venue, the idea is that you transform a space into a personalized wedding salon, invite just a few people, do the words and say the thing, and with a few glasses of bubbly you’re off to wherever the rest of the day takes you!

It saves so much money. It’s efficient, and stress-free. You still have your A-team at your big day, it’s still beautiful and traditional enough to please Babcia, and for people who don’t want to make a lot of fuss, it’s the dream.

For Pop Up Weddings clients exclusively, I’m offering a special price point that provides top-of-the-line music and audio services for Valerie and Co.’s entire introductory package, which you can check out here. It is drastically reduced from what any mobile DJ would charge for a usual ceremony and bubbly service, but you know I love to support a local sister and make a team work together.

If you’d like to know more, or just want to discuss your (wishing it was as fuss-free as a pop-up) wedding planning progress, drop me a line!
